MovieStarPlanet - Review

Is MovieStarPlanet (MSP), a safe and fun place for children?
..or is it an adult money-making machine, exposing children to explicit adult content, while putting them at risk of being hacked, scammed and contacted by adult stalkers?

As a parent, you have to be careful letting your children use social networks. Grooming, hacking, credit card scams, bullying and exposure to explicit adult content, are plenty.
MovieStarPlanet.com claims to be a safe and fun place for children at the age of 8 to 15.

These are MSP's words from the MovieStarPlanet website: "At MovieStarPlanet, we are dedicated to keeping the website safe, fun and clean for everyone."
Regarding safety: "MovieStarPlanet takes the safety of its users very seriously. Vernon Jones is the Head of Safety at MovieStarPlanet and his role is to safeguard children against all forms of inappropriate conduct and keep the online community as safe as possible.
MovieStarPlanet aims to provide children aged between 8 and 15 years with a safe, secure and fun social networking platform."
Information for parents: "MovieStarPlanet is a great game and community for children to have fun, be creative and make friends. The safety of our users is our highest priority at MovieStarPlanet."

Lets put this to the test

MovieStarPlanet at first look:

The first impression you get of the MovieStarPlanet site, is this log-on screen.

A pimp-looking wanna-be and a trashy blonde .....!  Is this kids-friendly, just because the image is poorly drawn, and even worse animated? Hardly.

The first impression you get of MovieStarPlanet, right after creating your avatar, which any adult can do by the way, is that MSPs focus actually isn't about children. It's purely about making money. This site is trying it's absolute best to place candy in front of kids, making them beg their parents to buy it. Nothing on MSP has any real value what so ever! Still, they sell their "items" for sky high prices.

$79.99 is VERY expensive for getting some virtual cloths and diamonds! Most other social networks are completely free, and offer a far better product. You can even get real quality games for way less money. Look at any top title at a gaming store, and you will pay $59 at most, for something that delivers MUCH better quality and entertainment.

On top of delivering a very small products at a very high price, MSPs access and virtual items are limited to a certain time-frame. When the time is up, you need to buy it again!. ..Plus, you still have to buy all the stuff on the side, after paying for being a "VIP", which only gives the right to the items.

In short: MSP delivers very poor content at extremely high overprices.

MSP security:
Besides being extremely expensive compared to what you get, MSP is nowhere near as safe as the company wants you to believe. MSP is the perfect place for groomers and crammers. Anyone can make a fake online email, which is the only security check MSP have, despite the fancy words on their site. Any adult can freely and privately chat with thousands of children worldwide. Children can easily be tricked into giving away personal information, by promises of free stuff. What MSP means by "The safety of our users is our highest priority at MovieStarPlanet." is a mystery, as there is no safety or security at all. MSP do have some moderators, who look at reports. But as anyone can enter MSP anonymously, grooming and scamming can be done comfortably in complete safely. And IF caught, the person can just make another anonymous account and continue the hunt.

MSP claims that the identities of the children on the site are kept secret. Take a simple search for art-books and you will see that MSPs statement is highly incorrect.

These are just a few examples. The leak of private information ranges hundreds of pages!

MSP, the social network:
The social part of MSP, is in form of a clumsy profile page, that every user have. You can send and receive messages, and put some badges, that's it. It's the most limited platform I have ever seen. Even Twitter has more opportunities, despite it's simplicity.

MSP would probably claim that it's due to "safety and security", but looking at how the game is run, it's crystal clear that the real reason, is due to lack of programming skills. The platform is made in flash, which makes it heavy, stiff and extremely slow. Making "real" social network content, would make the site even more heavy and practically unusable. The MSP code seems extremely clumpy and old. This is probably also the reason why MSP doesn't make a real mobile app for the game.
The chat rooms are painfully slow too, and really shows the lack of code optimization. Besides being slow, they don't look great either. The drawings are terrible, and the animations are really really bad. Everything is "stick-man" animated, and done by people who doesn't have a clue about ergonomics.

Also, you have to wander why twerking is part of the animation option? Not that there is anything wrong with twerking, but it's not really a dance for children at age 8 is it?

MSP, the game:

The "game" part of MSP is very limited as well. The avatar is leveled by getting fame. Fame can be bought for money (real money) or gotten by making movies. I guess that this is what MSP is referring to, as the "game". The movie maker is horrible to say the least. It's clumsy and limited, which makes for minimal opportunities to make something worth watching. Most of the children don't even care either, as you earn fame based on the amount of people watching, not the quality of the movie. So why bother? This ruins whatever little fun there might have been behind the original idea of making movies, and makes it into a tedious task that the children do just to get fame. Not fun at all. Besides the movie part, there is a small arcade with mini games. This is made in the same way as many other online mini-game sites. Small arcade-like flash-games, put there to advertise MSP's mini-game site, Zebra Games.

MSP, hacking and scamming:

Hacking and scamming is a constant danger on MovieStarPlanet. With the lack of security, scammers can freely and safely lore children into giving away their passwords or credit card numbers. As all moderation of MovieStarPlanet is done via reports from children, the moderators will only know of scamming when it has already happened. Same goes for hacking and account theft. Of cause, MSP completely denies every single claim about hacking. However, when looking at the user generated content on MSP, it clearly shows that hacking is one of the biggest problems on MSP. The fact that MSP turns it's blind eye to this, confirms the initial assumption about the site. MSP is NOTHING but a money-making machine for a greedy company, NOT a safe playground for children.

This was just a tine outtake of the countless pages of hacker profiles.

Here is a similar tiny outtake from the thousands of art-book pages about hacking:

A simple YouTube search also show something very different from what MSP claims: YouTube search for MovieStarPlanet Hacking

MSP as YouTube client:

MSP has a TV room where the children can watch and comment on YouTube videos. It's just a slow reference platform for YouTube, but with filtered content. The idea is, that the children can watch YouTube without the parents worrying about them watching adult content. The idea is good, but besides the video search being very slow, the filter doesn't do much difference. It's VERY easy to get around the filters, and watch all kinds of adult content. See examples below.

These screenshots are taken with very simple searches, and are clearly not filtered for children. (The search words are hidden, so MSP can't just block those specific words, and then claim everything is clean)

If you ask me, this is not what you would call appropriate content for 8 to 15 year-old's.

Conclusion:

MovieStarPlanet is a poor attempt at mixing a social network with a game. It's extremely overpriced, extremely slow, extremely boring and it's not a safe place for children.
I would not recommend MSP to anyone, especially not to children. Here is the rating of their site, using their own rating system:

One of the highest level MSP players by the name of PUMP, actually made an alternative to MovieStarPlanet. It's called PUMP-Planet.
